Software is ubiquitous, part of the brand promise, and a competitive business differentiator. However, software teams still face classic software engineering conundrums. The constraint of environments is one of these classic software engineering problems that persist in a time of frequent release cycles and global supply chains. Each member of the software lifecycle team requires access to production-equivalent environments for development and testing activities.

Skytap delivers a purpose-built, cloud-based lab solution to accelerate and optimize the software lifecycle. Skytap provides teams with the resources necessary for the precise time needed to perform development or test work. With unconstrained access to environments as close to production as possible for as long as necessary, teams can test as early as possible, identify and remediate defects more quickly, and remove provisioning wait times.

Read this report to learn how Skytap enables software teams to deliver better software, reliably, and predictably while producing more valuable business outcomes.

The concept of the Cost of Quality, that is, the cost of rework to remove defects, is that the later in the lifecycle a defect is identified, the more expensive it is to resolve the issue. With its shift in requirements ownership from the business to developers who will discover requirements through changes to the source code, the Agile movement is effectively pushing requirements definition to later in the lifecycle. Applying models for the cost of rework to Agile projects reveals the hidden costs of the late definition of requirements. This report provides economic models for evaluating project results and selecting the most appropriate practices.

In 2012, voke published economic models to evaluate the hidden costs of software projects.  Our key findings show that since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2009, the average cost of software projects is rising dramatically, this is in spite of smaller teams working shorter durations.  At the same time, rework costs remain high or unknown and high profile software failures continue to make headlines daily.

Organizations must understand how defects create a hidden cost of rework in every software project and how these costs manifest differently in Agile and Non-Agile projects. Given the impact of catastrophic software failures on the brand, we should be witnessing a movement toward increased quality, not a reactionary call for more testing after the software has shipped.

Software engineering professionals are familiar with the concept of Cost of Quality, or more specifically, the cost involved with removing defects, essentially the cost of “rework.” The premise of this concept is that the later in the lifecycle a defect is identified, the more expensive it is to resolve the issue.

With the failure of www.HealthCare.gov, US taxpayers will pay the price for the cost of rework.  Modern tools such as service virtualization enable early testing of incomplete or unavailable components and systems to help mitigate potential risks of production failures.

Uncovering defects earlier in the software lifecycle saves time and money. In today’s environment where businesses and governments run on software, removal of defects related to requirements is essential to eliminating the risk of exponential cost overruns and schedule delays.

Collaboration and availability is essential prior to beginning development. It is much less expensive and easier to meet, discuss, review, and refine to ensure that requirements are properly defined and communicated than to change the code at a later point in the project.

Effective collaboration and test coverage of key requirements is essential. Make sure you invest properly in architecture, requirements, design, and quality practices that prevent the release of catastrophic failures.
Tips to avoid catastrophic failures:

Most importantly, understand the business risks of prioritizing schedule to the exclusion of quality and ultimately cost. Empower your test organization to protect your brand from catastrophic failures.

If you’re interested in optimizing IT resources by transforming your application lifecyclein particular efficiency and qualitythen Join Theresa Lanowitz, founder of analyst firm voke, as she presents the findings of a recent market snapshot on performance centers of excellence (CoEs). Topics covered will include building a performance COI, achieving qualitative and quantitative ROI, gaining organizational maturity, and realizing strategic value and tangible results. You’ll come away with a new strategic approach to delivering customer satisfaction, high quality, and resource savings.

Following the economic downturn of 2000 to 2003, the enterprises that pursued short-term cost-cutting strategies such as blindly outsourcing and rollbacks in quality assurance found themselves ill prepared for future opportunities. New research suggests that those development organizations that continue to invest carefully in critical IT areas such as Software Production Management and virtualization will be better positioned for the next cycle of growth and expansion. In fact, so-called "back-end" development processes such as the build-test-deploy cycle are ripe for time- and cost-savings and productivity improvements.

Join noted industry analyst, voke's Theresa Lanowitz, and Electric Cloud VP Engineering Martin Van Ryswyk as they explore specific ways you can transform your software development infrastructure to cut costs yet boost productivity. Attendees will learn how not to just survive the economic downturn, but thrive.

To achieve business optimization through the application lifecycle, organizations are building centers of excellence (COE). A COE focused on performance is a strategic way to deliver customer satisfaction, high quality and resource savings.

Join Theresa Lanowitz, founder of voke Inc., as she presents the findings of a recent Market Snapshot on Performance Centers of Excellence. In this presentation, we will discuss:

  • Building a performance COE
  • Achieving performance COE ROI – qualitative and quantitative
  • Gaining organizational maturity through a performance COE
  • Realizing the benefits, results, and strategic value of a performance COE

How Virtualization is Enabling Self-Service to Transform the Global Lifecycle
Date: Wednesday, July 23, 2008
Time: 2:00 PM Eastern; 11:00 AM Pacific

Banks have ATMs; grocery stores have self checkout; airlines have self check-in. All of these self-service approaches provide convenience for customers and deliver ROI for the companies that offer them.  Self-service has appeared within the corporate environment as well.  Many companies are offering self-service access to computing resources to their business constituents. This increases the ability to provide infrastructure and services more efficiently and use resources in more strategic ways to benefit the business.

Cutting edge IT services are now available through a self-service model thanks to virtualization. Virtualization lets companies pool IT resources and provide them as needed throughout the entire global lifecycle.

Join analyst Theresa Lanowitz, founder of voke Inc., for this informative session where you will learn about self-service IT and:

  • Key components to the global lifecycle transformation
  • Current issues hindering the implementation of the global lifecycle and how to overcome them
  • Best practices and innovative technologies available for the enterprise

Learn how virtualization is enabling self-service to transform the global lifecycle!
